PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a type of disorder caused by hormonal imbalance. It is commonly diagnosed in women who experience irregular periods. Women, under the age of 40, who have a family history of diabetes also have a high risk of PCOS. While there is no one specific cause for PCOS, factors like genes, insulin resistance, inflammation highly affect the level to which PCOS can affect a person.
There is a common misconception among people that Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are one and the same. But that is not true at all. While both these diseases are connected to the ovaries, PCOD is caused by a type of system disorder while PCOS is mainly caused by hormonal imbalance. In both these conditions, small cysts can form in the ovaries but PCOD can be the greater evil, considering the way it not just impacts the menstruation cycle but insulin levels, weight and fertility hormones too. PCOD is more common than PCOS.
Both PCOD and PCOS have similar symptoms which largely go undetected. If you experience any of these symptoms, apart from getting irregular periods for more than 3 cycles, it is time to get tested:
Both PCOD, as well as PCOS, are types of lifestyle diseases which come from following unhealthy eating, practicing little to no physical activity. If not treated in time, PCOS can add up to problems for women trying to have a baby and conceiving can take a lot of time. In addition, women with PCOS also have a high miscarriage rate. Hence, the biggest way to get rid of PCOS is to improve your diet and lifestyle. Cutting out carbs and following a strict diet which could aid in weight loss is one of the biggest contributors in treating PCOS and also ensuring regular periods. If the lifestyle modification does not reduce the symptoms, medical treatment is offered, including birth control.
